The Modifiable Risk Factors

Here's what we can change together to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and extend your life
Hypertension
The "silent" killer - the higher the blood pressure, the more stress on the heart and vasculature 100 million people in the US have high blood pressure 40 million people are not adequately controlled
Hyperlipidemia
Drives the progression of atheroscherosis - leading to clogs in arteries that supply heart In the US, 1/3 people have hyperlipidemia
Diabetes
High blood glucose can damage blood vesesels and the nerves of cardiovascular system 7th leading cause of death globally 37.3 million adults (11% of the population) with diabetes 8.5 million are undiagnosed
Obesity
Worsens hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes - amplifying the dangerous affect of each risk factor Increases risk of CVD by up to 28% - 5% increase by each BMI unit

Importance of A Coronary Calcium Scan

A calcium score scan, also known as a coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan, is a specialized X-ray test that measures the amount of calcium in the walls of the coronary arteries. These arteries supply blood to the heart muscle, and calcium buildup in them is a marker of atherosclerosis, or the hardening of the arteries, which can lead to heart disease.

Importance of a Calcium Score Scan

Assessment of Heart Disease Risk: The primary Goal of a calcium score scan is to assess an individual's risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD). The amount of calcium detected correlates with the likelihood of significant atherosclerosis and the risk of a future heart attack.

Early Detection: The scan can detect the presence of coronary artery calcification before symptoms of heart disease appear, allowing for earlier intervention and management.

Guiding Treatment Decisions: The results of a calcium score scan can help us decide on the best course of action. a higher calcium score might lead to more aggressive lifestyle changes, medication (like statins), or other interventions to reduce cardiovascular risk.

Personalized Risk Assessment: The calcium score provides a personalized assessment of heart disease risk, beyond traditional risk factors like age, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and family history.

Monitoring Disease Progression: In some cases, repeated calcium score scans can be used to monitor the progression of coronary artery disease over time.
